Designers Agree: These 3 Layout Mistakes Make Your Home Feel Messy

Designers say there is one common layout mistake that instantly makes a home feel messy and cramped: ignoring scale and spacing.

A too-big piece of furniture can make a room feel crowded while too-small furniture can make items you might want to tuck away (like fans, brooms, or humidifiers) stick out like sore thumbs and feel like clutter.

Below, design pros share why ignoring scale and spacing makes for a messy-looking home, and the three specific ways you should avoid the common layout mistake.

Scale Culprit #1: Furniture That’s Too Big

One of the reasons people purchase large sofas or try to fit more than one sofa in a small living room is to maximize comfort. However, lead interior designer and architect at Decorilla Anna Tatsioni says doing so actually makes the rest of the room more uncomfortable to move through.

“One too many times, I’ve seen someone set their heart on a specific sofa, only to find that it swallows up the room,” she says.

Even if the pieces are beautiful, their sheer size can overwhelm the space, Carol Alda, the interior design coordinator at Z Gallerie, adds.

“When furniture is too large for the room—or placed too close together—it makes the space feel cramped and visually cluttered,” she says.

To prevent a cluttered feel and a messy-looking layout, avoid squeezing in oversized furniture, and take Alda’s advice and leave approximately 24 inches for walkways.

“When everything has the right proportions and enough space around it, even a small home can feel clean, open, and well-designed,” Alda says.

Scale Culprit #2: Furniture That’s Too Small

If you’re moving into a larger home and are bringing your old furniture with you , the temptation might be to fill a room with lots of small pieces, but Becca Meyer, the founder and principal designer of BB Meyer Design, recommends against this approach.

“A single larger coffee table or console creates a calmer visual field than several small pieces scattered around the room,” Meyer explains.

Additionally, too-small furniture can make items you might want to fade into the background (like computer monitors or exercise balls) stand out more.

Scale Culprit #3: Furniture That’s All the Same Size

In order to avoid making the mistake of purchasing an oversized sofa or cluttering a small room with too many tiny pieces, people often make another scale-related mistake: they purchase furniture that’s all the same size as a safe default option.

“Using furniture that’s all roughly the same size and height makes a room feel flat,” Meyer says.

The designer explains that when everything sits at one visual level, a room lacks contrast and interest. The key is to balance the size of your furniture and room decor, grounding the space with larger base pieces and bringing in smaller, supportive accents for visual harmony and a beautiful and practical layout.
